Sony's promised "additional power options" of course, but the battery life is on the sucky side. However battery life is on par with similar devices of it's size (portable DVD players or pocket PCs with large screens). The two big drains are the screen and the UMD. So you get fairly poor life watching movies (the battery-life quote for movies, by the way, is for UMD movies were the disc is spinning constantly - watching movies ripped to memory stick will last much longer). You get decent life playing music (about 10-15 hours I'm told). > With such short battery life, doesn't that pretty much negate the > portability of the device, making it just a really really small > playstation > with only a few games? Well... no. Like most devices you can get a cig-lighter adapter, air adapter, etc. This makes it about as portable as most things like it. You just don't get super-high quality, multi-functional devices with 20 hour battery life yet. As far as "few games" that's not really fair - the things only been out a week. Its library is already what, twice the size of the DS library? That being said the games are the main reason I've not bought one yet. Although it's an impressive line up I personally just don't sports or straight racing games normally. It really ends up that there's only one or two games that I'm interested in and none that I "need". I'm also disappointed with the cost of software and movies for it. I would prefer to see handheld games (even PS2 quality handheld games) for less than $25 rather than $40-$50 and movies (especially movies only playable on the handheld) in the $15-$20 range rather than $20-$30. I assume that this will start to come down (or some killer game will hit for that I must have... ) and I'll probably get one. For that matter I'll probably just break down in the next week and get one regardless... the only real reason I survived the launch day was because I was in bed with a fever. ;^) It will simply never happen, but if Sony wants UMD to succeed for movies and such they need to suck up the cost and put a UMD drive directly into the PS3. Preferably with the ability to also play PSP games on the PS3 as well. A cheaper stopgap would be to add a PSP connection port to the PS3, but personally I'd much, much rather see a UMD drive on the system.
