No not the first. People go through these decisions every day.
Periodlically there are issues like this that hit the news.

In our area (northern Virginia) in 1990's a TV weatherman was in an
accident and diagnosed with PVS. After a year or so his wife wanted to
stop the feeding tube. Parents and brother objected.  Local
politicians and the governor got  involved... The family made some
nasty accusations regarding the wife. Is this beginning to sound
familiar? Only difference was that the Congress and Presidency did not
get involved. The outcome was exactly the same though - the courts
found for the spouce and allowed the feeding tube to be removed. The
man died a short time later.
