ok get this. XP you said? uninstall the expired virus software.
Connect to the internet. Start --> Control Panel, Security Center. In
the virus protection area, click Recommendations. You will be directed
to Microsoft, but you can only get to this area from here afaik. The
first link will be a 12-month free trial from Computer Associates.
Download, fill out the form. Make sure to record the license key.

BTW I asked someone who teaches computer security about your laptop
and she said that if performance has been degrding over time, chances
are your laptop has caught something, and the latest round of viruses
is fairly evil.  But that memory is also a big candidate for causing a
slowdown when running XP. She characterized my recommendaton of 512
meg as low.
