On my property I have dug two pretty big stumps out by hand. It's not fun,
but it is great exercise. I dig all the way around the stump, then use an
axe to cut through the visible roots. Then put a chain around it to a truck
and tug on it a bit with the vehicle to see how much it moves. this will
tell you how "easy" it is gonne be at that point to finish pulling it out.
At this point I pull the stump and keep chopping the roots until it loosens.
A benefit I have is a large parcel of propery, so I can just drag the stump
to the back and let it rot naturally.

One word - dynamite!  Drill a hole, stuff it full of dynamite, light
the extra long fuse, run like hell, and watch the sky so that you can
see whose house the stump is going to land on.
