First IANACPA....

I think this is fairly common practice.  I don't think much is
required to file an extension except a form and an estimated tax
payment.  As long as you don't owe taxes, there's really no penalty
for extending.  Since tax preparers have a finite amount of time in
the first quarter to deal with taxes, sometimes they will file
extensions for clients and deal with the filing after April 15th to
help spread out their workload more evenly.

If your CPA filed one without asking, it might be worthwhile to have a
conversation with them about it, but I wouldn't be too concerned with
it if you trust your CPA.
