I've had some pretty serious problems with the interpretation of all
of the comic books films that have come out with the exception of the
Punisher (in spite of some general silliness in the story), Elektra,
Judge Dredd and the Road To Purdition (none of which I read), and Sin
City (which appeared to be pretty damn close to verbatim (I was
impressed -- plus I think Elijah Wood was good casting even though he
didn't say anything).

Spider Man -- the "Ultimate Spider Man" series the movies have been
based on basically sucked ass all the way around imo. They made
gratuitous and stupid changes to the character (biological webbing --
and the loss of powers in the 2nd film). Mighty Morphin' Power Goblin
-- I've heard people say the original costume wouldn't have worked in
a movie -- I'm not necessarily so certain of that, but still... even
if it wasn't _exact_ they could have avoided making the costume look
like something from Saban.

Daredevil -- Really should have been titled DareBatMan... Even within
the individual film is completely inconsistent, because he has these
conversations with his partner where the partner is saying that
they're dying financially and they can't afford to continue doing all
their pro-bono work ... Meanwhile Matt Murdock is sleeping in a
million dollar sensory deprivation chamber which is a near replica of
"the Bat Cave". What pro-bono client gave him all that? (This is a
mistake the Spider Man movies have fortunately avoided.) The
visualization of his hearing was -- gratuitous, silly and unfortunate,
but forgivable in comparison. Imo making the King Pin a "minority"
(black or otherwise) also significantly changes the story -- it
removes much of the "edge" as the KingPin is supposed to be
representative of the upper 1% (granted criminal) who are continually
fucking-over the remaining 99% of the population. I think it has more
"bite" when he's a white guy (historically in power -- white slave
owners, etc) instead of being a member of a "minority" who have been
historically opressed in this country. The tattoo on bullseye's
forehead was silly, though forgivable I think as the character has
always been presented as being a stark-raving lunatic. I do wish
they'd used something marginally larger than a paperclip tho (just for
gp suspension of disbelief).

X-Men -- Lady Deathstrike - great character with history and story
that could have been used in the movies reduced to a few flashy
visuals and no dialog before being killed off. Rogue - got the stripe
of white hair from Captain Marvel (who she killed, which is why the
powers stayed with her) after having been the adopted daughter of
Mystique (who of course trained her as a member of the "Brotherhood of
Evil Mutants") - also got the ability to fly and superhuman strength
and "invulnerability" from same. Mystique - great character again with
lots of history reduced to a cronie for Magneto because he's "cool",
slick, stylish costume never seen in the films (forgiveable, but still
-- it was nice). Between Mystique and Rogue they managed to rob
themselves (and the audience) _again_ of loads of plot and story for
films, actually, much moreso than with Lady Deathstrike.

BatMan -- BatMan Forever seems to have been the best of them thus far,
although I think they cheated themselves out of a much better Edward
Nigma character by making him more like the gags in the comedy show
from the 50's than the original character who was calm and collected
-- not sure if Jim Carey would have been the best casting if they'd
gone the other way tho -- maybe Alan Rickman who played Hans Gruber in
Die Hard, the voice of God in Dogma or Snape in the Harry Potter
films... prior to Kilmer they were decent but not great. After Kilmer
they became absolutely stupid -- not even worth mentioning... I wonder
if they really were trying to reproduce the 50's TV series with things
like Bat Ice-Skates (can we get some Bat Figure Skating in while we're
saving the day do you think?). Mr. Freeze in general -- WTF? The whole
idea behind the story of Mr. Freeze was that he was a cold,
calculating, nearly emotionless hard-ass because his sole purpose in
life was to restore his wife, the only person he ever had feelings
for. So in the film there he is in his frozen hideout, surrounded by
women in furry bikinis, give me a break! You had a _great_ story and
you threw it away for nothing -- for a few seconds oftits-and-ass and
a few schlock stale jokes that were old circa 1960. I'm hoping BatMan
Begins won't be such an abortion.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the films, but the film-makers make huge
numbers of bad mistakes. I'm looking forward to the Fantastic Four ...
and I'd love to see a DeadPool movie based on the first 26 issues, in
spite of knowing they'd butcher the hell out of it. Assuming they used
makeup, I wouldn't even mind them casting Tom Cruise (he's
consistently done a good job with roles that everyone has objected to
him being cast in like the Last Samurai -- and there was an issue
after the first 26 in which Loki made him look like Cruise and he
spent the next couple issues taking guns, knives, hacksaws,
blowtorches, etc. to his face to try and get the scars back without
any success, so there's an "in joke" reason to cast him. Who knows,
they could make a sequel that featured some of the better comedy
material from the subsequent issues. Who wouldn't pay to see Tom
Cruise taking a hacksaw to his own face? :)
