Each of us has stuff we'd like to pay attention to. Sometimes we don't
want to pay others to produce that stuff. Other people will often pay
the producers in order to get us to pay attention to their stuff.

I'm hoping that we can continue to evolve content delivery for multiple
types of contracts, to accommodate both the "I'll pay $X to see ad-free
curling" and "I'll watch curling but won't subscribe" viewpoints. One
size doesn't always fit all.

I read these paragraphs a few times, and up top saw the conclusion "a
large commercial for MSN", but the evidence presented for this was the
presence of "emoticons, display pictures, backgrounds, etc" within the
(default?) chrome of a recent beta Microsoft Messenger, which was then
followed by the stated intention "I would NEVER pay for that stuff."

I'm not sure whether the UI has too much advertising, or offers too many
features for free that you wouldn't pay for, or whether the true concern
is that someone dependent on you may purchase too many things on your
financial account.

I do know that if an interface becomes too offensive to too many people
that it will become more difficult for that interface to succeed, and
there will then be evolutionary pressure for more appropriate
alternatives to flourish. Is this what you think Microsoft is
accomplishing here...?
