China will continue towards democracy and a free market economy. It will not
happen as fast as the US would like but the Chinese look at the problems in the
former Soviet Union and want to learn from what has and is happening there. I
think they will always have some form of socialism. Taiwan isn't going to push
for complete autonomy, they've too much to loose, the economics of business
with China will keep Taiwan from doing more than occasionally rattling their
sword. They will eventually reunite and be governed much like Hong Kong. One
country several systems (Hong Kong, Taiwan, Tibet). It really goes back to the
Sino-centric model that was in place for centuries before the western world got
involved eventually leading to the Opium Wars etc..

So what's your take on things today?

It seems as if the students did get the message though. Their new
Premier seems to be more reform minded and China is definitely
engaging economically. They seem to be on a path to naturally turn to
democracy.

Although Taiwan could throw a wrench in those gears.
