Murmur is probably one of the best albums ever made by anyone ever, but
REM hasn't been REM for... oh, 15 years or more now. I saw the Green
tour in - 1988 maybe? Memory... Fading... - and I was agog at albums
like "Murmur" and "Document" at that point - I was maybe 13 or so.
"Green" was pretty good, but it never really carried me through. I
bought "Out of Time" the day it came out and, interestingly, I thought I
loved it. "Losing my Religion" is still a very good song, but much of
the album, after listening to it repeatedly, just lost so much. It
sounded so /clean/ - it felt out of place with the rest of their albums.
I haven't bothered with any further REM albums since. They don't strike
me as "bad" as much as just "beyond their prime" at this point. I
caught them on "Sesame Street" a year or so ago singing "Shiny Happy
Monsters", which made me smile, though.
Anyway, my music collection is dictated by my iPod on shuffle, which has
subjected me to the Supersuckers, the Avenue Q OCR, Ween, the Blood
Brothers ("Peacocks Skeleton with Crooked Feathers") and I've still got
6 hours of work left. Wheeeeee.
