Bethesda used to be a sleepy almost rural suburb but it is very urban nowadays especially right around the metro. There are a LOT of very good restaurants within walking distance of the metro and access to downtown by Metro is safe and about 20 minutes.
What I am trying to remember is whether there are hotels that would have a Bethesda address that are not right at the metro. I think there are a couple up off Democracy Boulevard. If the address of the hotel is Wisconsin Avenue or Old Georgetown Road you are going to be walking distance from the metro. >From Reagan airport to Bethesda you will need to change to the Red Line at Metro Center but this should be relatively painless especially compared to DC traffic :) I lived there quite a long time. I was most recently there in 2000 but if it was highly urban then I don't see it becoming less so in the intervening five years. Lots of really good ethnic food. High-end bars. I take your staying in the same hotel as the event?
