I have a friend who is an engineer at the Miramar (San Diego) landfill. They
actually have a contract with a third party that comes in and taps the methane
pockets that form in the landfill. Apparently it's a profitable little business
for them.

As for creating garbage, that's so true. My buddy says we dump a football
stadium worth of trash in Mimamar every single day. They have a very
sophisticated operation where they dig this giant hole, line it with special
liners, bury the trash, cover it, let it compact for awhile, then dig another
hole over it and start all over.

He says people dump perfectly good stuff all the time rather than try and sell
it or trade it. The city is trying to figure out how to create an auction for
all the great stuff people leave, but the idea is stuck in legal wrangling.
