Well there's a story there ...

"grussgott" is a Bavarian form of hello, but it's a kind of a warm
familiar greeting that sort of translates to "with God, hello". In
Bavaria, it's the kind of thing you'd say when you answer the phone or
the door or go into a local pub that might know you.

The rest of Germany, however, will laugh at you if you say this.
Others will peg you as a Bavarian, not a "real" German. In fact, many
people that "know German" won't even recognize this as German.

Anybody that's not gifted with languages will sympathize with me: when
you talk to your friends you speak your native language and when you
speak to others you just blurt out whatever language you're most used
to speaking with foreigners (not that I speak much of any language
well).

Well I was at a party and everyone was introducing themselves. As
usual I was half drunk and distracted because I was exchanging "war"
stories with a colleague. When my wife finally kicked me I just said,
"grussgott" and everyone thought that was my name (they found it odd
too). I just found it really funny and started answering to Gruss.
