To be fair, Fox decided that they didn't want to run the pilot as the pilot. They wanted something action-packed. The original pilot, "Serenity" (not the same as the movie) became a 2-part episode where everyone got introduced. The Fox-style pilot, The Train Job, was written in a weekend. It's not the most shining episode in the lot.
Some of the other episodes are better than others, and some are far better once you're familiar with the preceeding episodes.
