Dude, those are all choices you have made.  You choose to be a
contractor.  You choose, or actually she (your wife) chooses to work. 
I'm not saying it would be easy, but everyone could make the choice to
not use gasoline.  You might have to take a lower paying job nearby
your house, you might not want to, but you could.  Or you could only
accept contracts that allow you to telecommute.....
