Agreed, but I'm not convinced that hybrids do that.  They use slightly
less gas, but then we could  build a petrol engine that does all of
that and more.  Extrapolate out - no gas, all electric?  That doesn't
work.  Any MME could design a petrol engine that would kill a hybrid
in both emissions and MPG, but nobody wants to do it because it still
runs on gasoline!  (Hydrogen is where all of the sexiness is)

My concern is that hybrid technology is a red herring that fools
people into thinking something's happening when, in fact, it isn't.

Put another way, if we're committed to getting rid of fossil fuels I
bet there are many better ways to do it.  Someone needs to throw $10M
into a technology prize to look for innovations.  They could maybe
also sponsor promising technologies for development.
