Oil refineries for making gas have been dwindling in the US and we damn near
did it to ourselves. All the rules and regulations from the EPA do not make
it appealing for them to be built stateside. Kind of like new US built
ships, it just does not happen much at all and has not in a long time, again
because of all the rules and regulations. A big factor in the avilabilty of
fuel is not the amount of oil out of the ground but the ability to refine
it, there are only so many refineries in the world.
I find the comments about all the oil companies getting rich off these high
prices kind of funny. I work for a oilfield service company and yes we are
making more money due to increased exploration for oil. Then my wife works
for Chevron-Phillips, they do not make gasoline but do make the things that
go in it amongst other related items, they are not making good profits and
due to this are laying people off, moving people into what were high paying
jobs but at low pay, cutting back on benifits and so on.
The value of the US dollar is greatly effecting the cost, the huge
increased use of the product worldwide is greatly effecting the cost, the
damn traders here in the states are greatly effecting the cost of not only
gasoline but also natural gas(this is at a stupid high price because of the
traders), and the list can go on I am sure.
