I think he knew that. But yes, b/c pills do have major side effects (don't I know it) but the risks are quite low for teenagers, especially if they don't smoke. Almost always lower than the risks of a full-term pregnancy. And yes they can be prescribed for reasons of menstrual cycle.
Bottom line, while what Gel says is true, it assumes a happy child growing up in a happy home, which this child was certainly not, whatever her circumstances.
