You also may want to look at Shuttle's XPC series (http://us.shuttle.com/). 
They're small form factor machines that are about 6 by 7 by 12 inches. I built 
one about 2 years ago and its works great. The only drawbacks are they 
typically only have only 2 slots (AGP/PCE and a PCI). However they have a lot 
on the motherboard - 2 usb2 ports, 2 firewire 800 ports, video audio, 10/100 
network or gigbit networking, and spdif in and out - the last works well if 
you're building a media center PC.

In terms of performance, they run very close to the top of the line Dells etc 
when fitted with the same components.
