I prefer "left pane" without the hand... hand to me is kind of like
"click"... Left hand, left hoof, left tendril. :) Really it's more of
a style thing -- I just think "left pane" reads/sounds better than
"left-hand pane" -- which just reads/sounds ... cluttered ... (I don't
know why but the phrase "tight in the crotch" comes to mind as a
visceral description.)
