I sorta gathered that the reason they send spam in broken english is a
part of the psychological warfare involved in the con game. They
expect the average american to think that they would speak broken
english and so they produce that image both to meet expectation and
possibly to emphasise the image of "i need help". If they appear to be
more competent I would expect fewer people would be interested in
taking the bait and "helping" them.

Speaking of which -- my mother called me the other day. I hear from
her semi-annually... apparently she's had a run-in with some short-con
people. She'd been seeing a Dr. and the secretary at the dr's office
decided to take it upon herself after she missed a payment or two (not
a large sum or a long period of time) to make her sign a paper
agreeing to a specific amount monthly (she had a verbal agreement with
the Dr. that she would pay when she was able). The next day she's got
2 guys calling her and double-teaming her, making threats of jail time
and insisting that she write out a check to give to a "courrier"
they'll send to her house. Freaking scum.
