The movie they put out in the 80's was pretty cool actually... I think
I still have it on VHS at home. Used to have the sound-track on
casette too... now I have MP3's of the better tracks.

Not that there wasn't some camp -- basically everything in the film
related to the "Autobot Matrix (of Leadership)" were the bits that
sucked. :P Optimus has to pass it on to someone when he dies and
chooses Ultra Magnus, but he drops it and Hot Rod catches it which is
an opportunity for a gratuitous foreshadowing by having beams of light
suddenly emanating from behind him for no apparent reason as he
catches it in slow motion. Later in the film when Hot Rod uses it to
"light their darkest hour" he takes on the thing so he becomes their
leader, but apparently you can't be a leader and be sleek and fast.
You can only be a leader if you're a funky behemoth on the road, so
Hot Rod suddenly (and for no apparent reason) becomes "Rodimus Prime"
(who came up with that name?) which is a big family camper with flames
painted on the sides.

As a whole it's a fun flick tho -- lots of good visceral
metal-smashing animation and a few good one-liners. :) The death scene
for Star Scream had some nifty animation too. Leonard Nimoy voiced the
rebuilt Megatron (now Galvatron) character who's a cannon instead of a
dinky pistol. The villain (not Megatron/Galvatron) was voiced by Orson
Welles - his farewell performance.
