I've seen Lucas cop out like that on many an interview...

<cf_bullshite author="George Lucas">
"I mean, I am making the movie that I think is appropriate to what I am
doing. It's not market research. I am not like a studio. I do what I
want to do. I don't check it with an audience. I say this is the story.
This is the story I'm going to tell for very personal reasons and I'm
going to go ahead and do that."

He doesn't use market research, but suddenly Jarjar got a lot less
screen time in Clones when he pissed everyone off in Phantom Menace.
I'm sure it was just a coincidence, though.

Boba Fett was an incedental character in the original trilogy, but
strangely gained alot of cult fandom over the years. In Star Wars
Special Edition, he got more screen time (with this dumb forced "playa"
image). The new trilogy has everything to do with him and his father.
I'm sure it was just a coincidence, though.

Regardless, this whole "it's my party and..." attitude just comes off as
self indulgent. This was especially true when he bastardized the
original trilogy with Special Edition, and eventually, the DVD version.
He kicked his original fanbase in the stomach. This is the same person
that said...

"I am very concerned about our national heritage, and I am very
concerned that the films that I watched when I was young and the films
that I watched throughout my life are preserved, so that my children can
see them."
-- George Lucas speaking against the colorization of black and white films.

I'll have to stop myself here. It's easy to get me griping about the
hypocracy of George Lucas. :-)
