But when the kicks are $180 a pair, brand new in the stores, they
aren't donated, they are bought or stolen. When the laces have been
replaced with $30 custom laces. When the t-shirt is a $90 tshirt, when
the winter coat is a $450 brand new parka, when the cell phone is the
latest model, when the mp3 player is matched with a custom set of Sony
headphones (not all at once, but over time), these aren't homeless or
down-and-out people. These are hustlers. Probably about 50% of the
beggars in and around the Boston Commons.

A new coat and shoes held on with rubber bands and 2-day growth of
beard doesn't cause the same kind of warning flares. Nor does brand
news sneakers in last year's style. Nor a brand new pair of jeans and
3 mismatched coats.

I've worn a lot of donated and hand-me down clothes in my life, and
little of it was new, and none of it was in the latest style.
