I may have spoke too soon.

I've got this doctype declared already:

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd";>

Now that's already compliant-mode, correct?  Did I do the right thing at the
beginning and then forget about it, thus making my day today that much
nicer?  ;^)

If so I think all I have to do for FireFox compatibility is replace my IE
specific HTTP fetcher with a cross-platform one....
