I think the whole "Nanameachines" argument - as well as this idea of fear (or
perhaps not fear at least observable fear-like behavior) meshes with the ideas
in the book "Prey".

The exact ideas set for there would explain this who thing from that
perspective.

Of course you could also have:

1) Aliens. X-Files kind of experiments on captive populations. Stealing
children is perhaps a stress test or could have some other motive.

It's more of a stretch to explain all of the "off-island" stuff but it's still
possible.

2) Magic. (Which is my least favorite option - I really hated the whole
"Pyschic" episode). The island is magical and draws people to it - first
pirates and vagabonds who've created the culture of the "others". They steal
children to stave off genetic inbreeding perhaps.

This has the benefit of allowing all of the "facts" we've seen in the show (the
psychic, the "bad luck", the healing, etc).

3) Metaphysical. What if they died in the crash? What if this island is some
kind of purgatory peopled by those too stubborn to move on to heaven or hell?
Children are stolen (or are simply attractive and coveted) because they, being
innocent, are more drawn to the "light". Or something.

The hatch and the smoke and other things are the interpertations of those on
the island of things they refuse to understand. The "Security System" is
actually either a demon or an angel (or both) taking those that are ready to
move on.

Like the magical explanation this can easily explain all of the weird things
seen in the show.

4) Science. Using the nano cloud as mentioned a mad, Moreau-like scientist (or
group) has set up shop on the island.

The "others" are former castaways who've settled for working for the group in
an unofficial capacity. The group is essentially diefied by them.

It's really hard to explain all of the "off island" stuff here (unless you know
that they were planning to "hijack" the plane and had agents working to corral
people to it - but explaining Hurley's story will take a lot of faith).

The healing is simpler - we all know from "Star Trek" that nano machines heal
things like crazy. (Although why they didn't heal Boone would be a question.)
;^)

Well - that's my list of theories. Anybody want to start a pool as to the
"real" one? I'll put in $20. ;^)

(Actually this isn't a bad idea for a little site: you pay $20 into a paypal
account and have to come up with an "answer" (or pick a pre-defined one). Once
the answer is given the group votes on whose closest and they win the pot... it
could be done for a lot of shows. I wonder what the legalities are...)
