Assuming we don't manage to find a commune that fits us... 3 cats, 7 hamsters and a bunch of hermit crabs right now. A turtle would be nice (turtle is even one of my totems ... coyote, turtle and rabbit primarily... it's funny that a lot of people see the shell and think "hermit" or "recluse", given that turtle is such a social creature :) We haven't had any place for dogs, given that in the 5 years since my ex and I split up I've never had the money for a house (rent or buy). Honestly given our situation I wouldn't intentionally go out and adopt more animals -- we got the hermit crabs for Tiff, but the hamsters and all 3 cats have been sort of "rescues". We've ended up with them because other people didn't want them for one reason or another. It was less of an issue when it was just the first cat (Max) who appeared to be stray but just wandered in to our apartment one day and we suspect from a large array of behavioral quirks had been used for experimentation. The last cat (Pumpkin) is about as close as you can get to ferral without actually being a wild cat. He "belonged" to a friend of Tiff's brother who was never home and never interracted with (or cared for) the cat, but just let him stay in her apartment and put food down for him. Unless you have the fridge open he won't let you touch him, no matter who you are or how long you've been around.
