More specifically if the act feels good then the organism does it more.

So those organisms for which it feels best will do it more and over time
select and enhance that trait. This may not be a good thing.

It may very well be an evolutionary misstep that we enjoy orgasms as much as
we do. We enjoy orgasms more than sex (or procreation). We don't need a
viable partner for procreation to get an orgasm (we don't need a partner at
all in fact.

So we've got a tremendously powerful biological reward that doesn't require
the act it presumably evolved to promote.

Orgasms are biologically extreme: heart rate leaps, blood vessels constrict,
muscles spasm and you end up exhausted, weak and vulnerable. Orgasms are
psychologically extreme: massive pleasurable stimulation. Today that
pleasure is laced with social pressure from several directions and in many
cases not an inconsiderable amount of guilt.

The drive to reach orgasm is often overpowering. The reach it we'll ignore
basic biological defense mechanisms. We'll push through pain, ignore
environmental changes and physical extremis. People die in the attempt to
reach orgasm.

While we can get orgasms by ourselves who are we kidding? They're always
more fun with somebody else. Sex generally adds to the physical stress of
obtaining orgasm. More importantly sex adds significant risks of disease
transmission. To obtain orgasm we'll fail to take rational precautions.

So - the orgasm... an evolutionary triumph or mistake?
