About the time they released .NET MS announced "the end of com". I
don't remember if they said they wouldn't support it anymore or
described it as being "deprecated" or "discontinued"... Certainly
there are still people working with it as it takes time for something
that's become wide-spread to die off, but as MS has said as much as
"it's garbage" it wouldn't be very helpful to someone's career to
build anything new with COM and of course, many people who've built
much of their careers on COM suddenly had to (or maybe still have to)
choose between relearning (years of training essentailly down the
drain) or surviving on the niche of gradually deminishing COM
implementations still in use, like COBOL programmers. I'm not saying
there's not merrit to change, even in moving away from COM necessarily
-- but you asked why people care what Longhorn is based on and I'd
imagine this fear is a good part of the reason why people are so
anxious about Longhorn.

I don't have any specific url's handy, but it was talked about quite a
bit on the HOF lists when MS made the announcement.
