And that changes timestamps etc.

Do you have a mailserver? If so, you could just copy the folder you want to 
move to gmail from the filesystem, run mbox2maildir over it, replace all 
occurences of your old email address in the headers with your gmail address and 
drop the files in the outgoing queue.
