Yes digital makes a big difference. Where a tube is forgiving of the
analog signal, an LCD really isn't and it makes the same signal look
more blurry on an LCD (at least to me). But with digital, text is
razor sharp.

Be careful of the really low ms response rates. Sometimes they are
acheived by actually cutting out how many bits per pixel of color
value the red, green, and blue pixels display.

Also be aware that unlike multisynch tube monitors, an LCD is designed
for a single resolution. If you go with that 1600x1200 display, make
sure your video card can support running games at that resolution. And
if it can't, the next best resolution it will display is 800x600 since
that's evenly divided. Getting a 19" monitor that displays 1280x1024
means that the display has a 5:4 ratio instead of a 4:3 ratio and
there is no other downsampling resolution that will divide evenly and
look right.
 
I love my Dell 2001FP displays, but LCD stuff can be a pita to sort
through compared to tubes.
