Nice write up.

I think, however, you put way too much into the biggest gun theory
which, these days, doesn't mean a hill o' beans. The US has nukes, so
why don't we just "wipe out" Iraq? Why didn't we wipe out Vietnam?
or Korea? In all of these conflicts we've left (or stayed) with our
tail between our legs because your theory (we'll just go in and blow
everything up) doesn't work.

Having nukes does help Israel avoid an all out attack but it doesn't
stop anything else: not Scuds from Iraq and not suicide bombers. So
the biggest gun isn't much of a deterrent to an enemy, especially one
that's not a country.

Nukes are essentially worthless in all but the most dire
circumstances. Today the most powerful weapon is a human on the
ground - intelligence - without it all other weapons are worthless.

No, defense was small (13%) and the tax cuts weren't cuts but
spending. Even so, they're both smaller than pork, Mr. Bush's largest
expenditure.
