I don't know if this is the case with DSL, but I have read, and experience, that with cable modems, they tend to "gather" errors that must be periodically cleared by pulling the plug.
I have a Linksys cable modem, Linksys router and Linksys WAP signal booster. My symptoms include ever-slowing access to my server, random WAP signal losses (for several seconds to minutes) and very slow download of porn. Once I cycle the power on all three Linksys devices, I'm good to go for several days. At first, it annoyed me, but, I would prefer to cycle the power often rather than suffer through long downloads. How often does this occur with your setup? It could be a hardware or router software problem.
