I don't know that they really make other people look bad... It is a
generalization obviously -- and I don't know her personally, so I can
only comment on my experiences. If I met her in person I'd like to
think that I could get to know her without letting my preconceived
notions about the predictability of the tattoo get in the way. We all
do stupid stuff, and at some point almost everybody does something
stupid just because it's popular.

Yep, same here. :) I tried pot too... but apparently am such a geek
that I don't know how to inhale... :P When I came back from Navy
boot-camp I went and got my only tattoo actually because I was in the
process of "reinventing" myself. I'd always said I would never get a
tattoo -- at one point it was as a part of my mothers ideological
regime -- later it became because I couldn't think of anything I'd
want to have on my body forever... Then when I came back from
boot-camp I felt a need to change myself -- to do things that I'd
never done before and the tattoo was an easy outlet for that. In
retrospect it was a bad idea. I picked from the book, and the artist
put it on with the same sort of care that a McDonalds employee has in
assembling a Big Mac. It's on my left hip -- a heart with a banner
over it... At some point I'd like to have it fixed up some and have En
Famille etched into the banner... "En Famille" specifically because
it's the informal for "with family" ("tu en famille" as opposed to "tu
es avec famille" which is formal) -- there is no english equivalent of
"informal form" for that phrase (at least that I'm aware of)...
Moreover I have in my head the image of a totemic (some have said
busy) which includes a coyote (my primary totemic animal) a scorpion
(my western astrological symbol), a pair of comedy/tragedy masks (I
can't for the life of me remember the name for the symbol), and a tao.
Of course... other expenses like the child support, the divorce and
serious problems with my teeth continually ensure that I don't have
the money to go find an artist to put it on, so I continue to put off
drawing the illustration in favor of work.

Don't be silly... I'm sure you'd look FABULOUS with the BatMan logo in
the middle of your forehead. :P

Actually my impression of it is that tattoos on guys in general is a
lot less about "looking good" than it is about self-expression. I
suspect that's why most guys if they don't have lots of tattoos have
their one or two on their shoulder or upper arm where a t-shirt covers
it most of the time anyway. As opposed to girls who frequently get
their first or only tattoo on their stomach or chest. (Though I get
the impression the lower leg is more popular for them than the
shoulder, but I think those are more a matter of self-expression and
that placement's about being less overt when they wear sleeveless
shirts.)
