Why not Java? Closely tied to CF so you can double up and learn it for two reasons...
Lots of good books to choose from, Java in a Nutshell and Java by Example are great O'Reilly books to pick if you are reasonably OO aware. Other than that, for a reasonably easy learning curve and good platform independence Free Pascal should fit the bill. http://www.freepascal.org/ It's loosely modelled on Borland's' Delphi and should be able to cover all your points..... It's available for FreeBSD, Linux, MAC Classic and OS X, MorphOS, Netware, OS/2 and Win32 so platform independence shouldn't be an issue.... Books to learn from.... Delphi in a nutshell is nice... The object hierarchy is almost a 100% duplicate of Delphi so you learn one, you can transfer to the other... With Free Pascal, its also a nice leader into .NET if you are interested as the latest Delphi incarnation supports .NET and the language hasn't had to change *too much* to cope with the alleged *paradigm shift* (I hate that expression) by choosing something like Free Pascal, you will a wide skill set with a little effort.
