I belong to a couple of those groups, but I disagree with them. And I
live in New Mexico. Judging from the number of Chihuaha registrations
in the neighborhood I just moved out of after a year and a half, some
fairly substantial portion of the neighborhood was probably illegal,
but they were not on welfare; most of them ran small businesses. I
think that such groups operate on a substantial amount of xenophobia,
and the more I read their stuff the more I believe this.

And yes, a hundred years ago my people were in steerage. Hell, fifty
years ago my *father* was the emigrant to Canada, though not in
steerage. He never graduated from high school by the way, but retired
a respected news reporter.

Yes, it's possible. I don't know if I would totally eliminate the
safety net, but I do dislike the Canadian model of government as
nanny.
