Dean is tainted, to say the least, and maybe a little paranoid like his old boss. If I were the President and I were asked to talk to a Federal prosecutor, I would hire outside counsel as well. Wouldn't you? Seems only prudent. Bush is a very wealthy guy, it's not like hiring some big-shot lawyer is going to affect his net worth.
Rove leaked the fact that Wilson's wife was the CIA employee who (Rove claimed) authorized the Niger trip for Joe Wilson. But he didn't give anyone her name. There are two issue in question: 1. Was Plame in fact considered an undercover agent? I don't know if this is clear or not. I believe when she worked overseas, she was identified as a member of the U.S. government, though not as a CIA analyst. Then again, I don't think CIA anaylsts are ever in the habit of identifying themselves. Does that mean she was undercover, or not? Does that mean all CIA analysts in the field are considered undercover agents? Absent any specific CIA regulations, the question may end up being determined by the judge. 2. Were Rove's revelations enough to "identify" Plame? All he said was Wilson's wife was a CIA employee. The reporters then had to find out her name from some other source, then presumably confirm the information. So Rove's info doesn't necessarily constitute "unmasking", though in these times I think a judge may take a dim view of that argument. I wonder if the prosecutor is going to pursue charges against Rove.
