FDA prohibits sale of Red Bull drink
Wednesday, 13 July , 2005, 14:26

When contacted by UNI,
FDA Commissioner M Rameshkumar confirmed that the drink was not being
allowed to be sold and they had sought a certificate from the
manufacturers to prove that taurine, an amino acid used in the drink,
was synthetically manufactured.

The FDA has said the certificate should be from a reputed laboratory
in the country such as the Central Food and Technology Research
Institute. The company has also been asked to give the cost of
production of taurine for 1,000 mg.

A non-governmental organisation had moved the FDA on the issue.

According to contents on the bottle, the can contains about 1,000 mg
of taurine. The cost factor would give the FDA a picture of the cost
of production of the energy drink.

According to sources, generally taurine was of animal origin, obtained
mostly from bile of ox.

Rameshkumar said the FDA tested on average about 800 drugs and food
samples every month and ended up sending notices to ten per cent of
them.
