The 'Steve" name actually comes from a story that a friend of mine
(Cooper) told me. He grew up in the backwoods of West Virginia and he
was telling me a story about a friend of his that lived deep in the
woods. The first time he went to visit, he stepped onto the front porch
and lying at the base of the door was a huge mountain lion. He stopped
dead in his tracks. His friend opens the front door and Cooper tells
him to stay inside because there's a huge mountain lion sitting there.
His friend says, "Oh, don't worry about him. That's my pet
lion...Steve!" I found it funny for two reasons:

A.) He had a pet Mountain Lion
B.) He named it Steve.

Naming a horse Dave would be hysterical. Could you imagine watching the
Kentucky Derby and hearing the announcer calling it...

"and in the lead is Princesses Salvation and in second place is Wind
Dancer but coming up on the outside is Dave!!!"

I decided a while back that when I get several horses, one will be
nick-named "Dave"... you can imagine introducing the horses to
people...
  here's Snowball, Buttercup and Dave...

You'd almost expect him to be standing there with a cigarette hanging
out of
his mouth and a "What do you want?" expression on his face...

Then again, I'm just strange <g>
