I agree. I had one dog for the longest time and would whine and bark when I
am not around. When I got a second dog, both seem happy and do not care if
I am home or not.

But, now if I separate one for a period of time, the other mopes around the
house and will not leave the front door until the other dog it back.

The one thing I know is that dogs are PACK animals. They are not really
designed to be alone. If you are not going to be there to provide a family
group/pack for such long hours, you should really consider getting at least
two dogs so that they can keep each other company during the day.

I do not think the cats would count for this. :-) Even though our Samoyed
[http://images.google.com/images?q=samoyed] loved to heard the cats.
