Tom Sawyer wasn't mentioned. Jane Austen was and so was "The Shipping News,"
neither of which is likely to be read by the average ten-year-old...

As for the hair-pulling, they are at the stage of cutting and pasting from
the archives now, but this comment is pretty typical of those that say it
isn't...
This is what I posted, exactly:
"I have to admit, I have not admired J. K. Rowling's writing ability
ever, but I give her plenty of credit for doing it and being a
success. That is worthy of praise, even if I don't care for the
final product. I just find it un-literary. By that I mean, I do
not fall in love with her sentences. I do not find myself
interested in rereading any of her tomes. I find that they ramble
all over the place, lots of chase scenes, which are great for
movies, but boring to read over and over again."

This is pure opinion, and includes my admiration for her ability to
complete all these books. Well, especially the first one. After
that, with the money rolling in, I bet it was much easier.

But, funny thing about writing books, or painting a painting, or
sculpting a sculpture. Readers and art viewerss are entitled to
have opinions. Same goes with movies. So are you insinuating that
we can't post our opinions about books and movies, or about art for
that matter? Pulllleeeeeze!

I did not put down J. K. Rowling. She is a success. But her
writing is just not my preferred kind of writing. Some critics
(folks who get paid to do what I do for free) agree. I posted a
link to one who gave a moderate review of this book. Some, I am
sure, feel differently. Feel free to post a link to an alternate
critic's opinion, from someone who just loves her books.

And I think it's great that kids read, period. I don't much care
what they read at all. I am an "unschooler," after all. Whatever
works for your kid is okay with me.

Do I need to post my post about reading stuff into other people's
email posts again? Seems to be happening with alarming frequency.
