Within gmail it seems as though the emails are in order of arrival, and if there is a question as to who is being answered, you look at the text that is quoted. Not always useful though HoF people are pretty good about it.
The Hof Archives on the other hand tread according to who was relying to whom, which is not always accurate, i e people sometimes hit reply on an email and forget to edit the subject.
