We have a 100-year-old house that is very difficult to add central air.
So, we just run a few window a/c units. There are two upstairs in the
kids' rooms and three downstairs. (One in our bedroom, one in the
kitchen and a larger one in the dining room that keeps the rest of the
floor cooled.

We like these because we can better control the cooling zones. If it's
not too hot, we will leave the rest of the house open, but cool only our
bedroom.

Subject: Portable Air Conditioners Suck

We broke down during the heat wave and got an air conditioner. Since
our window sills are old and cracked and I've got a fear of crushing the
landlords car with a dropped air conditioner we tried a "portable"
model.
