The point here is our national food supply has been poisoned - that's
not a small issue.  I would expect the President to be very concerned
that his citizens are being poisoned.

If we were talking about runoff from the local factory that had
contaminated the ole fishin' hole then, no, the President should stay
out.  But when there's been contamination that's poisoning the entire
nation, that's a federal issue and something he should take leadership
on.

We could make your same argument for 9/11.  Why should the President
get involved?  Isn't that what the DOD and the military are for? 
(Actually we would have probably gotten a better result but that's a
tangent.)
