some of my favorites -

Terry Pratchett - extremely intelligent satire in a fantasy setting
James Lee Burke - detective fiction, harboiled, Louisiana and Texas

Janet Evanovich - some of her stuff is essentially romances, but the
Stephanie Plum series is amusing and sexy, if fairly unrealistic

CJ Cherryh - the Cyteen/Downunder books are a nice look at the
sociology of a "hard" science-fiction future. Think Poul Anderson for
grownups. I can't stand her fantasy writing though.

Tony Hillerman - If you haven't met this author yet, he's well worth
the read. Start with Coyote Waits for a very perceptive portrayal of
justice Navaho style

Steve Brewer - while I am being regional, humorous mysteries set on
the seedy side of Albuquerque. Think Dave Barry meets John McDonald

Speaking of Dave Barry - how about Carl Hiaasen?

Or Ellis Peters for murders in 11th-century monasteries.

Elizabeth Peters, the Egyptian mysteries (He Shall Thunder in the Sky,
the Hippopotomas Pool, etc) but the rest of her stuff is fairly
mediocre.

Nevada Barr for a female parker ranger who keeps finding dead bodies...
