I'm not sure more troops would actually do anything, the problem is that
you really don't clear an area out.

They just go hide, and they look like they are gone.

I'm not sure how you can pull out of something like this. I think that
not only this administration, but those before this one thought that
maybe, the people of Iraq would be ready to do some of this stuff on
their own.

Or maybe they thought that if we set up shop in Iraq we could get better
intel, than we could search caves that had been abandoned weeks before
we got there.

Because that is really what these guys are doing now. Iraq is a place
where we lure terrorists in, and capture and kill them, best I can tell
we are doing a pretty good job of that, speaking militarily, now is the
public ready to keep our military under siege for this amount of time.
The terrorists a clearly less capable, but as we have seen, the blind
squirrel will get his nut.

The insurgents continue to kill Americans, groups continue to fight, and
the only thing we can say we have actually done is arrest Saddam
Hussein, at least from a PR standpoint.

Yeah, we did a pretty good job invading, we moved across that land
faster than anybody had done before. Of course the last group that tried
was going up against a military with weapons from us, and the people
before that were still using horses, so really, is that a good judge?

But now I am just rambling.

I wish I could figure out what to do here, but this is one of those odd
spots where I don't know what I think we should do. I usually have some
opinion, right or wrong, I at least try to think of what I would do.

But now, I can honestly say, I don't know.

And unfortunately, I fear the president is in a very similar situation.

Yeah, I agree. We're basically in the middle of a combination civil
war/regional war/kill-US war. Right now what's keeping us from making
any progress is Don Rumsfeld and his decision to use too few troops.

Consequently, the marines go clear an area out, but then have to leave
and it fills right back up again. One of those areas is called the
Iraqi border!

Before anyone says, "the generals aren't asking for more troops blah
blah blah" remember: that's a cover for Mr. Rumsfeld who sets the
goals. If you don't set a goal of securing the airport road then no
troops are plenty of troops to do it.

In Mr. Rumsfeld's defense he may be ordered by the President to do his
best without increasing military levels, etc.
