Yeah - but it was well thought out... and he tried to explain it well enough so that it didn't seem "magical". I thought it was somewhat believable. It was such an interesting twist that he could read and write but not speak... very clever I thought. And then the confusion when he learns to speak French first... I especially like in later books when he expands on that and describes how Tarzan saw the words as little "bugs" that he named... and the words were combinations of the names of those bugs. Interesting stuff. Annoyingly this major aspect of the book has never once made it into a retelling of the story... they either pull the "me Tarzan" bullshit or ignore it completely. I'd love to see a good TV series that stayed true to the story...
