I think you are looking to much into it.

Yes, the overall goal was to promote their services.

But it was how they went about it, I don't think they were implying that you
should be putting your pictures only on their servers, I'm pretty sure they
wouldn't let me do that.

I have roughly 200GB of pictures at home.
