I don't think there is anything to be joyful about with this development. I 
agree with Mike that it is foolish to believe that evacuating Gaza will help 
convince Palestinian militants to lay down their arms and agree to a peaceful 
co-existence with Israel. 

The settlements provided fodder for the Palestinian PR campaign that Israel was 
an "occupying force" rather than a country that defended itself. By pulling out 
unilaterally, Israel is acknowledging that the pullout was going to be part of 
the peace process and they are willing to make concessions to foster peace, 
even if the Palestinians don't want peace. 

Following the evacuation, I would totally close the border with Gaza and force 
the Palestinians to make due for themselves for awhile.
