I have read all of the books, and saw the film last week. I have to say, and I may be in a minority here but hell, that I don't really rate the books at all. I found them badly written and unimaginative. The film was a good representation of the book I thought, but only served to highlight the weaknesses of the story.
I read Philip Pullman's Dark Materials Trilogy at the same time, and I think I was perhaps spoilt by that. There was not a lot of setup nor any foreshadowing or lead-in as to who the villain was; so there was no way ya could have guessed. The first one left you hanging as to most of Harry's back history w/ he who must not be named. The second one didn't seem to explain why things happened. How did Malfoy get Voldemont's old diary, how / why did Voldemont store his "memory" in the book?
