Dude - you're email client really doesn't like quotes in subject lines. > You know Donaldson hates those books right? ... Or at least he does > now... My ex exchanged a few emails with him... He was in the midst of > writing this one at the time and says he only wrote it because of > massive demand for him to write it and was really mostly just trying > to shut everyone up. I can't say I understand the demand for it -- > I've never read them, so I can't judge. It may be new or temporary... in the forward to "Daughter of Regals" he talks about his love for the character and how, after living and breathing him for such a long time he was ready for something different. It was an obsession for him. People rarely look back on obsessive behavior with fondness - that may be all this is. But still... I can't see anybody spending several years writing books "just to shut people up"... it seems like there must be some need to write there (perhaps in an obsessive love/hate way). Wouldn't it have been easier to just stop reading the emails? ;^) He's fairly clear that he had this story in mind for a long time. He explains that in this essay: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/feature/-/536975/ref=sdr_bk_2/103-85786 46-1385419 And on his own site here: http://www.stephenrdonaldson.com/main_frame.php?page=fromtheauthor.php I think there's definitely some trepidation here... but I truly don't think he hates the character - although I'm sure has sometimes. Maybe your ex just caught him at a bad time in the creative process?
