It may be new or temporary... in the forward to "Daughter of Regals" he
talks about his love for the character and how, after living and breathing
him for such a long time he was ready for something different.

It was an obsession for him.  People rarely look back on obsessive behavior
with fondness - that may be all this is.

But still... I can't see anybody spending several years writing books "just
to shut people up"... it seems like there must be some need to write there
(perhaps in an obsessive love/hate way).

Wouldn't it have been easier to just stop reading the emails?  ;^)

He's fairly clear that he had this story in mind for a long time.  He

I think there's definitely some trepidation here... but I truly don't think
he hates the character - although I'm sure has sometimes.   Maybe your ex
just caught him at a bad time in the creative process?
